New to Historical Notes are the wills and probates of John M(ichael), Jacob, John J., and Lizzie Stonehocker. I transcribed these wills from the original hand-written documents. We have not had these documents in their entirity before. 21 July 2010.
Photos for Stonehocker family tombstones in Ohio, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri are now in Cemeteries section. There are dozens of Stonehocker graves. If you have photos, please send them to share!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We are adding to the family photos section which will be organzied by families of Michael and Nancy’s children. Of course, we do not have photos of all of them and their descendants. but we have hundreds- thanks to all who have shared their family treasures! I just added the photo of Mary Pew Stonehocker to the Cemeteries-Iowa Section.
Please note new tombstone photos at the end of the Coshocton Co. cemetery section. There has been confusion over the years about Mary Stonehocker “daughter” of John M. and Anne. Within the last few years we have discovered Mary was not their daughter. However, John M. and Anne did have another child- John, the third son. In the 1820 census of Tuscarawas County, John was listed as a separate land owner. He married Mary Gard on 27 Jan 1819 in Tuscarawas Co, Ohio- just next to Coshocton Co. He died before Dec 1825. We have not been able to find his death date for certain nor his tombstone. His widow, Mary married Nicholas Miller on 11 Dec 1825. She is buried between Nicholas and his first wife, also a Mary. Thanks to the Coshocton Co. Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society, a story on Nicholas and his first wife was published in the Spring 2011 edition of their newsletter along with a note and photo from the Miller Family Cemetery which also showed Mary Gard Stonehocker Miller’s tombstone.
Life sketches of John M. and Anne, Jacob and Elizabeth, Michael and Nancy, and John and Mary Gard Stonehocker have just been added as well as sketches for Phoebe and John Dickey, and Elizabeth and Joseph Arney.
New to Historical Notes you can find some of Elizabeth Anne Stonehocker Carnahan’s diary entries which were found in History of One Room School Houses of Coshocton County written by Miriam C. Hunter. published in 1974.

30 January 2011- Now posting of the tombstone photos of Perry 2 and Hannah Reynolds Stonehocker, Marion and Jerome Stonehocker and Celestia Stonehocker and Charles Gilbert Melcum. These are all descendants of Perry and Sarah Ann Sargood. They are buried in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, Kansas. Would love to have more photos. SM
9 December 2010- We just added information contributed by Charles and Patricia Fanning in the Civil War Historical Notes about the Fannings who served in the Civil War. Martha Ellen Stonehocker married John Davis Fanning. Several Fannings as well as Patricia’s ancestors served in the Civil War. Enjoy geting acquainted with your cousins.
Check the Stonehocker family roster. We have finally found the whereabouts of Joseph and Elizabeth Stonehocker Arney and the names of their children. Following their marraige, they moved from Ohio and took up residence in Goshen, Elkhart Co. Indiana. Check the 1860 census. We were lucky to find a posting of marriages in Michigan which showed Catherine Arney Aelison marrying John W. McCrery in 1907. It was her second marriage. She was 72 years old. She listed her birthplace as Indiana and her parents as Joseph Arney and Elizabeth Stonehocker. From that little bit of information, we found the family in earlier censuses. We have expanded our knowledge of the Arneys to include some of the grandchildren of Joseph and Elizabeth. Happy, Happy Day!
